As most of you know, my mom has also been battling a return of breast cancer. It is metastatic and appeared in her spine. Once a month my mom receives an IV drip of Zometa (zoledronate), which is a bisphosphonate, designed to alleviate symptoms in a bone metastases and prevent any additional bone loss.
My mom has been on Zometa since early last year. She's been getting a PET scan every six months to see if there's been any further damage of bone by the cancer.
She just completed her most recent PET scan on June 16th. We got the results of the PET scan on June 23rd and it's all good news. According the PET scan the Zometa has been working and has reduced the loss of bone due to cancer and in fact the damaged area has reduced in size, so she is in fact getting better!
The doctor recommends she continues her course of treatment on Zometa, and he'll review her status in 3 months, and we'll get another PET scan in 6 months.
