Last Friday, my mom went in for her usual IV drip of Zometa. We also decided to request seeing a doctor, since she has had a persistent cough for a couple of weeks. The doctor asked her to go and have a chest x-ray which confirmed that she had fluid in her lung again. She was scheduled for an immediate thoracentesis that afternoon. They extracted quite a bit of fluid from her lung and it was all sent off to the lab for analysis.
She had her follow up appointment with the oncologist to discuss the lab results yesterday. Marie went with her to see the oncologist, who is new to the doctor's office as my mom's primary oncologist, has also developed cancer, and is limiting the number of days he sees patients.
I'm afraid there is no good news. The lab results showed cancer cells in the fluid they extracted. So now they are discussing treatment options. Both options are forms of chemotherapy, and they want her to start as soon as possible.
The doctor's office is supposed to call us today with the final recommendation after all the doctors familiar with my mom's case have reviewed their options.
I'll keep everyone informed as we find out more.
