It seems like our lives only get more hectic. April is slipping away fast, and I feel like I've gotten very little accomplished this month. I've got lots of news to share, so bear with me as this may be a long and rambling post.
First off, we had some work done in our backyard. Lars hired a company to come and rip out the old concrete flower bed that was in the backyard, and replace it with a concrete slab patio, that we then put up a gazebo on. While they were ripping up the backyard they also removed the old 70s globe lights, which we really didn't need as there was already plenty of lighting in the backyard. As part of the backyard re-creation, we moved Lauren's swing set to the area in front of the new patio, so we could put up a trampoline for her to play on, and practice a lot of the new moves she's been learning in her gymnastics class.
Speaking of her gymnastics class, she's been in it almost a full year, and has progressed from "pre-rec" to level 1 and is now in level 2 gymnastics. The latest session ended yesterday, and her progress report indicated she's mastered 7 of 28 skills in gymnastics. Lauren's spring break was the week of April 9, and she got to spend mornings that week in gymnastics camp, which her instructor said really helped her along with her cartwheels and handstands.
This past weekend we had tickets to the third installment of our season passes for Broadway San Jose, for a production of "In the Heights". We also wanted Lauren's cousins to come over and play on the new trampoline, so Marie suggested we look for tickets for her and the girls to join us at the show. I found someone on craigslist selling 3 tickets to the show, exactly the number we needed. We met up with the seller and she ended up giving us the 3 tickets, saying it was good karma to do so. When we got to the theater, I was able to trade in all five of our tickets for five seats together that ended up being closer to the stage. Broadway San Jose has great customer service and certainly made our evening.
And the latest news for our family is the addition of a new member, a McNab border collie puppy who joined us this past Tuesday. Cookie is just 7 and half weeks old and she's very friendly and mostly calm for a puppy. She's bonded with us very quickly, and seems to love being with us. We were a little afraid she wasn't eating well, until Lars took her to a vet yesterday and they recommended we try Esbilac, puppy milk in a can, since Cookie really hasn't finished weaning yet. Adding Esbilac to her puppy food made all the difference and made Cookie go after her food with a vengeance.
The cats at first weren't too happy with Cookie's presence, but they've certainly gotten better fast. Domino has stopped hissing at Cookie, and now tolerates her presence. Bella never had a problem with Cookie, and is merely amused by the entire turn of events.
In work news, things are finally beginning to settle down at my office after my company went private (through a private equity firm). Layoffs are done, office consolidation is done, and now we have to get down to work again. One of the nice side benefits I got was a reward of a new iPad 3 for all the hard work we had to do over the last few months. Lauren of course wanted it immediately, as she's been asking for an upgrade to an iPad 2 for a while, but I told her she has to keep her iPad (first generation), and the iPad 3 was strictly for daddy.
For Lars, his spring break was the week of April 16, so we had the issue of juggling two different spring breaks. No real vacation for us, but we did take the opportunity to fly to Boise, Idaho over the overlapping weekend from April 14-16, to visit Lars' aunt and her family who were joining her for a small reunion. Lauren got to ride a horse while she was at Gayle's (Lars' cousin) house, something she's wanted to do again for a while.
So hopefully there will be time for a real break soon, but I wouldn't count on it.
