School Starts & The Circus

Incredibly, first grade started for Lauren on August 15, Monday. It seems awfully early to me, having grown up with a school that always started after Labor Day. Lauren's now completed two weeks of school at her new elementary school, a public school. It's been a bit trepidating for us, moving her from private school to public school, and we're still not sure we've done the right thing. In private school it was easy because the school took care of everything for us.

In public school a lot of things seem to be lacking, whether it's oversight of the children when transitioning from day care to school or school to day care, the lack of foreign language classes, music classes and even field trips. We'll be supplementing ourselves, since Lauren will start Chinese school this fall, and we're going to look for some music classes she can take. We do enough extra-curricular stuff with Lauren that maybe the lack of field trips won't be too bad.

Last weekend, Marie and her family took a mini-vacation to the South Bay, where they got a room at the Embassy Suites. We went to visit them so Lauren could hang out at the pool with the girls. It was good choice in dates, because the next day on Sunday, I had tickets for everyone to the Barnum and Ringling Brothers Circus that was in town at the San Jose HP Pavilion. The girls were so tired from two days of playing that each of them fell asleep at various times during the show, but all of them said they had fun and enjoyed the event. Lauren especially like the animals, especially the horses, elephants and tigers.
