Independence Day

Today is July 4, also known as Independence Day in the U.S. the day we celebrate the fact that we live in a democratic society that gives us the freedoms that most of us take for granted. It marks the U.S. declared independence from the Great Britain. It's a holiday that in the U.S. today is marked with outdoor barbeque celebrations and fireworks displays.

For us it was a day full of hope and wonder, but little independence. Early on, before lunch we got a call from the surrogate saying that she was having contractions every 15 to 20 minutes. That got us on red alert to get ready, since it seemed the little baby was imminently due. But we got a call back within an hour. It was a false alarm, but we spent the rest of the day anxious and waiting for another call, help captive by the little girl that will probably hold my heart captive for the rest of our lives.

It may be independence day, but for me it was a day thinking about the ones I depend on and the ones that will depend on me.
