At my mom's last doctor's appointment it was decided the chemotherapy she was on (Taxol), does not seem to be working, as she's still got ascites, and her fluid build up is coming faster and faster (she's at about a week and a half between needing a paracentesis).
So yesterday, my mom started a new chemotherapy regimen. This one is a combination therapy using a newly approved drug called Ixempra (delivered intravenously) along with Xeloda (delivered orally). The IV part of the drug is delivered once every 3 weeks, while she has to take Xeloda orally for two weeks right after the IV treatment. The downside is that the Xeloda pills are large and she has to take 6 a day (3 in the morning and 3 at night). For those of you that don't know it, my mom (and I) don't like taking pills. We've both have a really hard time swallowing pills for some reason. But my mom's going to be a trooper and stick with this regimen for now.
In addition, my mom went to the radiology department at Good Samaritan to have another paracentesis performed. I've lost count of how many she's had so far now, but it must be close to 10.
