Sports and the Average Girl

Little Michaela is growing up fast. She's going to be four months old soon, and she's incredibly strong for her little size. Just over the weekend we realized she has the strength to push her upper body up so she can look around if you put her down on her stomach. She was already quite strong in her legs being able to push herself up and practically hold all her weight on her legs.

It's no surprise little Michaela is as strong as she is. The women in my family have always been the strong and athletic ones. When my mother was a young lady, she was quite athletic, playing table tennis, softball, volleyball, among other sports. She was also one of the tallest women in her age group. In the old photos, you can see she stands almost a head above the rest of the women.

My mother used to tell this story about how she was the strongest person on the softball team so that the pitchers used to pitch ground balls to her to walk her, rather than let her get in a good hit. I think she used this as a motivational story for both of my sisters who were on softball teams of their own. She got so frustrated with the ground balls, she decided that even if they were bad pitches, she'd go after them, so she'd take the bat, and hit the rolling balls on the ground back into the air with a good swing. In that way she'd get back at the other team for trying to leave her out of the game, and she'd show them she'd make the best of anything they sent her way. As you can tell she was an athletic and strong woman when she was younger.

My two sisters were the same way, both as I said on softball, as well as volleyball, table tennis, and other sports activities. The house was filled with sports trophies from my two sisters. My older sister was even a champion table tennis player, playing at meets and events in Chinatown in New York City when we were kids. When she and my mom practiced playing table tennis, I was the ball fetcher. I was certainly no match for their slams!

I'm sure in no time, I'll be the ball fetcher for little Michaela!
