My mom went to see the oncologist yesterday and got the results of her PEP scan and the analysis on the fluid from her lungs.
They missed it in the first analysis from the first fluid extraction, but it appears she has a recurrence of cancer. This time it's in her rib and spine. The oncologist wants to do an MRI to make sure that's the extent of the cancer.
She's going to start on some oral medication immediately, and some antibiotics. After the MRI, they'll decide on a more formal course of treatment. The doctor says the cancer is not curable, but it is treatable.
It's sad news for all of us, but we're still trying to remain positive about it, and hope the course of treatment works and hope that the MRI will show that the cancer hasn't spread any further.
It's especially sad because just two years ago, the oncologist had declared my mom cancer-free after her bout with breast cancer in 1997.
